If you are doing a sailing course with us, then you may be wondering what you need to bring with you. First of all – bring little and please pack carefully. Everything you bring on board, must fit in your cabin if you are sleeping on the boat. It is preferable to use soft bags when packing. You can easily keep them in lockers onboard.
Clothes
Please wear well fitting clothes that will allow you to be cool but protect from the sun. Long sleeve cotton shirts work well. Sleeveless tops are not popular due to the possibility of scratches while working with the ropes and the likelihood of serious sunburn on sunny days. We recommend dressing in layers as the temperature can be considerably cooler than on land.
In cold weather it is much warmer to wear multiple thin layers than one thick layer. So pack fleece tops, thermal long sleeved or short sleeved t-shirts, vests, comfortable quick drying trousers or tracksuit bottoms (not denim as that takes too long to dry), warm hat and plenty of thick socks.
During hot weather shorts, t-shirts and quick drying fabrics are the best. Plus bathing suit, sun hats, plenty of sunscreen, sunglasses and insect repellant for nights on board. It can get chilly on the water in the evenings, so bring something warm as well.
Footwear
Closed-toed shoes must be worn at all times to prevent injury. Recommended footwears are boat shoes, tennis shoes but without black bottoms that will leave scuff marks on the boats.
Sun glasses and hat
It is very important to have sunglasses on the water. They should protect from every angle since sun light will also be reflected from the water and the sails. The glasses should fit snugly on the face and, as with the hat, a clothing attachment or a loop around the neck is advised.
Sunscreen
Sunscreen is very important because you will be out on the water for an extended period of time. It should be no less than spf 30.
First aid
A basic first aid kit is already on board (band aids, aspirins, motion sickness pills, gauzes, waterproof ban aids, gloves, scissors etc.).
Please do not forgive to bring your own personal medications. Also, you may consider adding ginger as a great natural treatment for motion sickness (ginger cookies, candied ginger… ).
Don’t forget a bottle of water and snacks like nutrition bars, fruit, and dried fruit.
Life jackets, sailing suites and gloves are provided by Ultra sailing school.
