Rovinj Istria

Embark on an extraordinary sailing experience with Ultra Sailing, as we unveil the hidden treasures of Istria’s captivating west coast. Since 2020, our renowned charter fleet has proudly called Istria home, with our charter base conveniently nestled near the picturesque city of Pula in the ACI Marina Pomer.

While most charter guests choose to set sail from Pomer and head south towards the alluring Kvarner Bay, we invite you to sail a different course and explore the wonders of Istria’s western coast. Prepare to be enthralled by the charming Venetian towns like Rovinj and Porec, as well as other interesting sights and delightful small towns.

We recommend organizing a taxi or rental car in Porec or Novigrad to explore the inland areas of Istria. Take a trip to the towns of Motovun, Vodnjan, or Groznjan and explore the local olive growers, winemakers, and truffle farmers, who will welcome you with open arms, sharing their culinary delights and ancient traditions.

Umag

Umag

Let’s start at the northernmost point and sail along the coast of Istria until Pomer. Located 5 nautical miles from the Slovenian border (Portoroz), you’ll find the town of Umag. The hinterland of Umag is flat and lacks remarkable landmarks.

Umag is easily recognized by its prominent breakwater extending into the sea. On the port side, you’ll find the ACI Marina Umag, which offers 495 water berths. The marina is modern and well-equipped. The old town harbor of Umag, located across from the ACI Marina, is reserved for local fishing boats. Additional mooring options are available at anchor buoys in the bay. A fuel station is located outside the marina.

A leisurely 20-minute walk along the beach promenade will take you from the marina to the town of Umag. Umag resembles a small resort town and doesn’t have many tourist attractions, but you’ll find excellent restaurants there. We recommend trying the truffle pasta.

Novigrad

Novigrad Church Croatia from the Sea

Continuing 8 nautical miles south along the unspoiled and flat coastline, you’ll find Marina Novigrad. This marina offers excellent protection from all winds and even in rougher sea conditions.

Mooring options are available on the 150-meter long breakwater with mooring lines, and there are around 10 fixed mooring buoys in front of it. In the new Marina Nautica, there are additional 365 berths with mooring lines for yachts ranging from 10 to 40 meters in length. The marina is beautifully designed and offers all the comforts. A large breakwater is located in front of the piers. The old marina provides 70 berths for smaller yachts, which are largely occupied by locals.

Novigrad itself is small but charming town. It features a beautifully laid-out long promenade that invites you for a leisurely stroll. While exploring the town, you’ll notice remnants of old city walls. In fact, until the 13th century, Novigrad was completely surrounded by defensive walls. One of the attractions is the Palacio Rigo from the mid-18th century. Today, this Venetian palace houses an art gallery. The town’s main square is home to the town hall and local campanile. The bronze sculpture of the guardian angel of Venetian merchants on the church tower is also interesting to visit. The basilica next to the campanile dates back to the 6th century but was practically rebuilt at the end of the 19th century. Overall, not much classical architecture remains, as the town is now heavily influenced by tourism. Numerous lovely restaurants and cafés can be found in the city center.

As mentioned earlier, it is recommended to rent a scooter or get a taxi and visit the inland areas of Motovun and Groznjan.

Porec

Further to the south, about 7 nautical miles, we arrive at one of the hotspots of the Istrian Peninsula, Porec. If you prefer a lively and bustling atmosphere, Porec is the place to visit.

Porec stands out quite picturesque on a peninsula jutting out into the sea. The small island of Sveti Nikola, with its hotels and bars, protects the bay from western winds and rough seas.

In the port of Porec, there are berths with mooring lines available at the western tip of the harbor and on the pier in the middle of the northern shore (with electricity and water connections). The Marina Porec is located relatively close to the city center and offers 130 berths. In front of the marina, there are about 30 fixed mooring buoys for yachts up to a maximum length of 20 meters. In the old town, along the quay wall, west of the small pier, you can also find some berths. The old facades along the northern shore of the bay create a particularly picturesque view. There is a lovely palm-lined promenade along the waterfront before reaching the city center.

Porec is heavily influenced by tourism, and its small, narrow, and winding streets lead you into the old town. You can follow the Via San Mauro alley through the entire length of the old town. Parallel to Via San Mauro, you’ll find the former Roman main street, the Decumanus. The old town itself offers beautiful views of well-preserved exterior facades. The town played a significant role as a major port and trade center in the region.

We recommend visiting the Basilica of St. Euphrasius, the church beneath the elaborate campanile with its hexagonal roof structure. Here, you’ll find numerous ancient architectural remains. Poreč hosts various events and festivals throughout the year, further enhancing its appeal to visitors. These include cultural festivals, music concerts, art exhibitions, and traditional celebrations.

Limski kanal

Continuing our journey, we head towards the town of Rovinj.

On the way to Rovinj, you’ll encounter the captivating Limski Canal, stretching for 5 nautical miles. If tranquility is what you seek, then this is the perfect haven for you. This canal, more akin to a majestic fjord, boasts dense forests on its left, while its right side is adorned with enchanting mussel farms.

Right at the beginning, you’ll discover three charming bays—Kriz, Soline, and Valalta—some of which are dotted with alluring buoys. This area is renowned among naturists who appreciate the freedom of clothing-optional experiences. At the end of the canal, a recently constructed pier awaits, equipped with mooring facilities. In close proximity, you’ll find two delightful restaurants and a cozy café, offering a delightful respite. While water and electricity connections are yet to be installed, the allure of this place is simply irresistible.

Rovinj

Additional 3 nautical miles south of the Limski Canal lies the gem of the Istrian coast, the breathtaking town of Rovinj. Recently, Rovinj has acquired an incredibly elegant ACI Marina that leaves nothing to be desired. With around 200 berths, the marina offers a luxurious ambiance, accompanied by a selection of delightful restaurants, elegant boutiques, and shops. From the marina, visitors can indulge in a magnificent view of the old town and the iconic tower of the Sveta Eufemija Church, serving as a captivating backdrop.

As a navigational landmark, the campanile of the local church and the nearby islet of Sveta Katarina serve as guides. However, the town harbor of Rovinj is not suitable for passing charter boats.

This unique city, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is rightfully hailed as the pearl of Istria. A leisurely stroll through its charming streets is an absolute must. The old town stretches along the coastline, culminating at the Sveta Eufemija Church. From there, visitors are treated to a fantastic view of the sea and the coast. The tightly packed houses in the old town nestle against the hillside, and at times, the narrow streets are so tight that only two people can walk side by side. Immerse yourself in the old town of Rovinj and explore its street cafés and vibrant atmosphere.

So, whether you’re seeking a romantic getaway, a cultural exploration, or a tranquil retreat by the sea, Rovinj is the perfect destination. It beckons travelers with its irresistible charm and promises an unforgettable journey filled with beauty, history, and a touch of Adriatic allure.

As you cycle through dense oak forests, you’ll encounter fascinating landmarks such as Tito’s former residence, which is accompanied by a zoo. Additionally, the island boasts an impressive Roman settlement and even the footprints of a T-Rex dinosaur. Bikes and electric cars are available for rent on the island, providing convenient transportation options.

Alternatively, you can opt for a guided mini train tour, offered in multiple languages, to discover the island’s highlights. Don’t miss the small photo museum, which showcases the glamorous life of Tito and his many celebrity visitors.

The marina, although small, offers essential amenities such as electricity, water, and shower/toilet facilities. It is advisable to check for berth availability before your arrival. Please note that mooring in the marina includes the entrance fee to the national park, and short-term docking is not permitted. Near the pier, you’ll find a hotel with a restaurant and terrace, as well as a nearby snack cafe to satisfy your culinary cravings.

For a truly serene experience, visit the tranquil bay of St. Nikola on the island of Mali Brijuni, where you can bask in the peaceful solitude of the island group.

Throughout the national park, it is crucial to respect the wildlife and ecosystem. Refrain from feeding or disturbing the animals and avoid picking any plants, as preserving the natural environment is of utmost importance.
