( Quarantine – an international anti-infestation measure, separating and controlling people and goods, which is intended to prevent the spread of disease or pests )
” The first Croatian quarantine in the world is the invention of the Dubrovnik Republic and it is our Croatian brand,” quotes are from historians for the Department of History and medical science at The Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts.
Dubrovnik had a strong trade, so it was open to epidemics that came most often by sea and inland caravans.
Historical sources tell us that the first quarantine was in the year 1377., when the Grand council of Dubrovnik decided to isolate people who were coming to the city.
˝ Who ever comes from plague-stricken areas, should not enter Dubrovnik or its surroundings ˝
In the year 1642, a complex ( Lazareti ) was built on the seafront, near the town gate, leading to the suburb of Ploce. At that time, the place was full of caravans and Turkish merchants, but with the fall of Austria – Hungary, that part will lose turkish trace. The only part left today is the Lazareti ( the prescribed quarantine ).

- It had 8 residential buildings and 5 yards, and today we still see them as a solid architectural entity
- Quarantine had to be passed by both, newcomers and Dubrovnik citizens who were suspected of becoming ill or they have been in a contact with a proven source of the disease
- Although quarantine was originally set at 30 days, it increased to 40, which is also found in the biblical story of Job (Job went to the desert for 40 days after suffering from the plague)… quarantine lasted at least seven or ten days for people with mild symptoms
- If the crew was infected, incoming ships had to have a label, a yellow flag
- Lazareti, in the 18th and 19th centuries, served much more for the accommodation of land wagons than for seafarers, who were quarantined on board of the ship, anchored in front of the lazarette or along the island of Lokrum or Mljet
- It is under the protection of UNESCO since 1979.
- Lazareti today are promoting the idea of symbiosis of cultural heritage and contemporary cultural and artistic creativity, with the desire to become a place for new artistic ideas, living culture and social activity
