First weekend of June for the last 26 years has traditionally been reserved for Susac regatta 100×2, organized by sailing club Mornar from Split. There are 2 crew members who sail 100NM from the start line in front of Split, around offshore island us Susac, and back to Split port. Among the participants there is always a great number of very experienced sailors.
Regatta Split – Susac Croatia
In 2019 when the last regatta was held under “normal” circumstances, there were 25 sailiboats, and the winner was Ultra sailing on Seascape “Petite Amiee” with Emil Tomasevic and Igor Pjacun as crew.

In 2020, the year of pandemic, there were astounding 54 singed up teams, and the winners were Denis Vukas and Igor Kvesic sailing on boat “Dubrovnik”.
2021 brings 26th regatta, which still holds the image of a small local event of true sailing enthusiasts. Maybe if there wasn’t this chance to mention this little island, it would stand forgotten, that far away at sea.
About the island Susac
Susac is a Croatia island located offshore in the mid Adriatic, 23km west of Lastovo and southeast of Vis. There is a lighthouse over the southwest cape Kanula, cape Nazene is the north cape , east is Lastovac. On the northeast is the highest peak Veli Gark of 243 m. And that about sums it up!

Throughout history, Susac has never had more than 24 inhabitants. Today you can only meet the lighthouse keeper, and during summer maybe even his family or friends. Southeast part of the island is the most indented with many colorful coves. Capes between the coves should be avoided due to shallow waters. Even though these coves are well protected from winds (except jugo), spending the night there is not recommended.
Other than the lighthouse from 1878, which is worth visiting, you can find a few uninhabited houses on the hill over Portic bay. On the hill by the village there are ruins of a pre-Romanesque church. In the cove there is a slipway for boats.
If you come across this bay and you meet some of the people there, don’t forget to leave them newspapers or bread, as this is a customary when visiting distant islands. Rental of the lighthouse is becoming more and more popular, so you might even find a tourist or two who decided to get away from it all.
This island should be visited only during nice, peaceful weather.
Sušac blues is a song by renowned Split band “Daleka obala” (literraly Faraway coast) that captures the magic of this island.
